Ennedi, Chad: We have received clarity on the community consultation process which is paramount to facilitating the delineation of the reserve and bringing Ennedi under formal Protected Area status.
Shaba Hills and Buffalo Springs, Kenya: Following a request for expressions of interest by the Isiolo County Government for the management of Shaba and Buffalo Springs National Reserves, African Parks prepared and submitted a comprehensive proposal prior to the deadline on the 10th of June. We have subsequently heard that ours was the only proposal, and further feedback from the Isiolo County Government is now pending.
Bazaruto Archipelago Marine National Park, Mozambique: While negotiations progress towards a final agreement with ANAC (the National Administration for Conservation Agency), we have employed Karen Allen as a project consultant, who has more than a decade of conservation experience within the area. Preparations for a site visit in early June are under way, and discussions with prospective donors are being arranged.
Gambella, Ethiopia: For the first time since the animals were collared, one of the giraffes crossed the border into Boma National Park, South Sudan, where it spent several weeks before returning to Gambella. Animal migration highlights the important nature of protected area networks, and with this in mind, a working ‘Proposal for a Network of Protected Areas’ document has been produced and internally reviewed. Unfortunately, regional security problems have significantly hampered our activities in Gambella, halting all infrastructural developments and limiting any progress with the lion and hyaena survey. Faced with these challenges, the park contributed fuel to local communities to facilitate critical evacuations following a Murle attack. We additionally supported a programme launched by the Ongogi administration to improve local livelihoods by helping young people to start small-scale farming activities.
